A blog about skating and cycling, or vice versa

Because I can#

At least, I assume I can, and if you never see this I guess I can't.. The capability under consideration is 'blog from my phone', and so far it seems easier and more accurate when the bus has stopped.

The phone is. a SE M600, and though it meets my primary criterion in that it can run an ssh client and has a qwerty keyboard, the symbian os is neither the model of efficient design (running on hardware several generations newer than my amiga and still slower than it was) nor of 'open' design (finding out how to get started developing for it is not exactly a batteries-included experience like linux) that its proponents claim it to be.

But on the bright side it's only taken 20 minutes to type the preceding, and I'm sure I could get better with (a) practice, (b) shorter fingernails.

As time goes by#

A near-miss is not a miss
A thigh is just a thigh
The fundamental things remain...

For them as were not previously aware, I have been pretty much off skates all winter since November's bike accident. Having decided the other day that a couple of months not walking further than about 100m a day (I've been commuting by bike, more on this some other time) has given it plenty of time to heal - and given also the observation that it hasn't hurt at all for the past couple of weeks - I decided it was time to get back on skates. So out for the LFNS RC yesterday.

I'm being cautious. It is still uncomfortable when taking the left leg to full extension, and I'm sure that slipping in the rain or doing certain kinds of emergency manoeuvre would b0rk it again, so I'm back in my crossmax just to encourage myself not to get too fast. Five months of no exercise other than commuting to work and the very occasional bike ride has left me not exactly fit for sustained skating speed anyway, though. Sill, good to be out at last.

My recovery notes to me: yesterday I was OK walking back from Liverpool St, today is sore when walking but not actively painful, tomorrow I am thinking it should be OK again. Next planned skating probably Sunday's Bunny Stroll

Less weak week#

More mobile weblogging - hey, catchy name. Could even be shortened - 'moblog'?

Took longer to recover from last Tuesday's RC than I expected, but by Sunday I was feeling like I might just be OK for the Stroll. Yesterday I felt better after the stroll than I had on Sunday before it, in fact - well, apart from having stacked when I got my fleece wrapped around my wheels - damn this recskating clothing - and hurt my wrist quite badly (as in, yesterday I was typing one-handed). So maybe it's just about having something else to focus on...

RC again tonight, though slower than the last one and much more comfortable. 'Confident' is the wrong word, still, but quietly hopeful I'll still be in a fit state to walk tomorrow.
